We have decided to do a lot of landscaping in our front yard during the coming year. I want to completely remove and replace the existing grasses, fill in where there were some trees removed and create a few flower beds. What basic equipment would I need to start out with? We have almost no yard tools at present, other than one push mower. Our yard is small.
It depends on the approach you take. To remove the grass, you'll either need to dig, till, smother (with newspaper, for example), or use an herbicide. You'd want a shovel and probably a tiller either way though, as those are generally useful in landscaping. Get yourselves some garden gloves as well to protect your hands. Depending on the flowers or any bushes you decide to plant, you may want some pruning shears too.
Wow, that is a big job! I've never tore up existing grass to replant it. I would think a rototiller would do the trick. You also need a wheel barrow. It will be easier to haul out the old grass, bushes and trees with the wheel barrow. If you are cutting trees down you need a chainsaw too. I can't wait to hear about your project as you start.
I think it will be hard to know what all you need until you really get started. If the stumps are still in the ground (from where the trees were removed) you will probably need a stump grinder and as someone else mentioned, you will most likely need a roto-tiller. Fortunately, you can usually rent this type of equipment from a home improvement store, so when you realize you need something you can just run to one and rent it. Most of the places will let you have it for the day and they even instruct you on how to properly use it.
Oh WOW starting from scratch! Ok. Shovel, mattock, hand saw, hand shears, crowbar and wheelbarrow are the essentials. Maybe hire a turf cutter (to pull up the lawn) and a rotary hoe (for the garden beds)
Hello I'd rent a mini-skid steer from Home Depot... it's only $111 for 4 hours (what it says on the site) and it will save your back from using a shovel. haha
