Getting up acorns

My niece came over yesterday to clear out an area for a garden she wants to make in a corner of my yard. She stays with me some after school, and it would give her something to do outside. She picked up a quart of acorns. These things are all over the yard. Is there a tool that makes light of this job? I don't want to even think about picking up all the acorns I'm seeing this year.

Good old "bend your back and pick it up tools". That's what I do anyway. And yes, you are correct, we have tons of acorns this year. Up around my pool area, you can't walk without crushing a few hundred along the way. If we have enough water this year, look for little oak trees springing up everywhere. As far aw your niece goes, you could offer her so much money for every bucket full she picks up. That's good incentive.

You could try a rake, but the tines are probably too far apart to pick up the acorns. If I were you, I'd bribe my niece to keep picking them up.

Just get a rake with closer tines. They come in all sorts and the right rake should make short work of this job. Save the acorns to give to the squirrels/birds come winter, compost them or use them for craft projects.

You could probably use a hoe instead of a rake. Then you would not have to worry about the tines. I do not know about any acorn specific tool. One of those pecan grabbers might also work, but I am not sure.

I think my mom said something about wanting a product called the Nut Wizard. I think she said it picks up all kinds of small things. My mom has so many acorns, you can not even see the ground. They are so dangerous, too! I can not count the number of times I have slipped on those tiny little boogers!

    Acorn bucket

Oh, the combination of feeding the squirrels and having an Easter egg -- I mean -- acorn hunt offers some fun options. My niece loved the idea of setting up an acorn feeder for feeding the squirrels. She's an animal lover. We're having a contest right now to see who can fill up a bucket first. We're counting them, too, and are going to have a contest to see who can guess the number of acorns in the bucket. Now, we've got to come up with a prize. Thanks, everyone!

I just got the Weasel Nut Gatherer for the purpose of picking up endless quantities of spiky balls that fall from Sweet Gum Trees. It works great AND picks up acorns AND small pinecones. My back is so happy...and my toes, too!
