My sister-in-law has a koi pond that is lined with one of those hard black shells. She noticed a few weeks ago that the water level seemed to be dropping. She has added water a couple of times and within a day or two it is right back to where it was.

She is going to have the shell replaced, but is wondering what to do with the fish while she does the repairs. Any ideas?

How big are her fish? If she has any five gallon buckets, I would put the fish in there for a little while. Fish that live in water features tend to be pretty hardy, so I doubt she will kill the fish.

    Fish hotel

We used to have a koi pond with 50-75 koi, some of them more than a 9-10" long. The biggest thing is to not use tap water either in your storage containers or in your refilled pond. Fish cannot withstand going from one temperature to another quickly. We used big plastic trash cans, but we filled them with pond water. We also used special chemicals available from pond supply houses to readjust the water chemicals to be fish friendly. Allow new water to rest and become the same temperature as what is in the storage container. The process could take a couple of days, depending on the size of your pond.

I would not put them in 5 gallon buckets for long. Perhaps you can get bigger containers to store them in. I would hope that she could get the problem fixed in a couple of hours. If it's just a couple of hours, they could use 5 gallon buckets.

The fish are probably 10 to 12 inches, so a 5 gallon container would probably be a bit tight for them. I like the idea of the trash cans. I will mention that to her!

Yes, trash cans would probably work better. In any case, repairing the pond sounds like a really big job! I don't envy her the work.

I think she should shift her fish to other bowl.
