I've been helping people with their gardening for years as well as other landscaping tasks. I am thinking of starting a part-time business doing this but I'm not sure what I would need to begin with. I don't plan on doing huge projects, at least not at this time. I'm more wanting to help people design beautiful garden spaces.

    Industrious gardening project

Chickie, that is one industrious gardening project you are considering. I wish you well. I could use someone like you who has a knack for gardening to help me lay out my yard and landscaping features. I see so many yards where little thought has gone into the planning. I'm at the start of my project and could use a good eye.

A former student of mine lanscaped my yard and did a beautiful job. It's his nack in life I think. We have tried to encourage him to break out on his own and start a lanscaping business but he is not willing to take that step yet. He has the software, does the research on plants and which one is best to use. He's great. Maybe one day he'll venture out.

Have you considered offering more of a design concept business where you would the architect of sorts and then subcontracting or letting the customer get someone to actually do the job? A lot of people need design help and could probably find someone to perform the tasks.

Digger has a good idea there. If you do want to do the work yourself, think about all the jobs you would do, and make a tool list. I think post hole diggers would be a good idea, but I am not sure what else.

    What type of plants

I would think there would be a market for someone who could take a soil sample and look at your overall layout and suggest specific types of plants for your landscaping needs. I know lots of people who have no experience figuring out what to grow where.

That's a good idea. I could try that first and see if the demand is there. Maybe I could even work with a local landscaping company (as in passing the work to them).

How would I test the soil, though? I like the rest of your suggestion but I'm not sure how I'd be able to do any testing.

I hope you have great success in this. I really do think there is a market for a landscape designer. Some folks might even want to do the work themselves but need help with their vision or on how to turn their vision into reality.

    Testing the soil

Your local agricultural extension consultants, usually contacted through county offices, can advise you on how to get your soil tested. They have all sorts of great recommendations and services for people in my county.

I suppose it depends on a few factors. I would suggest thinking about marketing, say maybe a website to get your self out there. You can have all the skills and talent in the world but if there is no work then its not working. But I would say as a designer you would want a good knowledge of design principles, local soil, climate, plants and materials. I good list of suppliers is also good. Also learing a design program like CAD is quite efficient and also presents well to clients.
